Extra-curricular music activities take place most lunchtimes and some evenings, and include choir, chamber choir, orchestra and examination theory. Each year, there is a Christmas Carol Service in Sunderland Minster and an Easter Concert, as well as regular musicals - the most recent ones being 'Grease' and 'Return to the Forbidden Planet'.
The music suite consists of a main music room and five practice rooms, off an adjoining corridor. There is a grand piano in the music room and an upright piano in each of the practice rooms. All of the electronic keyboards used in the lessons have full-size keys. As well as a bass guitar, there is a good selection of acoustic and electric guitars. There are also four drum kits in the department.
Specialist lessons are given each week by peripatetic music teachers in singing, clarinet, flute, saxophone, violin, piano, guitar and drums. Other instruments can be taught by arrangement.
The Music Department organises music tours abroad and we have already visited Salzburg, Venice and Lake Garda, where our students have performed in concerts.
