Student playing VolleyballSport is an important part of life at Sunderland High School. Pupils enjoy their Physical Education and Games lessons, and extra-curricular clubs are well attended. GCSE Physical Education is a popular option for Year 10/11 pupils and each year there is a healthy take-up at AS/A2 level.

There are 4 full time members of the PE teaching staff including the Director of Sport.

The school's PE and sport facilities include a sports hall (full-sized basketball and netball courts, four badminton courts, two indoor cricket nets); a full size astro-turf hockey pitch with floodlighting; and a grass pitch. Additional facilities on the Senior School site include a fitness room and a gym area. The following is a selection of sports offered by Sunderland High School:
  • Net and Wall Games: Tennis, Badminton, Squash, Short Tennis
  • Invasion Games: Basketball, Football, Hockey, Netball, Rugby, Volleyball
  • Fielding and Striking Games: Baseball, Cricket, Rounders, Softball

  • Outdoor pursuits: Orienteering, Problem solving, Health related fitness
