Pupils leave Reception and enter Key Stage One to continue their learning journey at the age of five.
Children continue to develop their knowledge and understanding of the world through an creative curriculum.
We aim to encourage each child’s individual personality and engage them in active learning.
A thematic approach to delivering the curriculum ensures that children are interested, enthusiastic and engaged. Regular assessment monitors each child’s progress.
The Infant department provides children with the opportunity to participate in weekly ‘Show and Tell’ assemblies where individual achievement is recognised and birthdays celebrated! We place children’s well being at the top of our list and encourage kindness to others in thought, and actions.
All children at Key Stage One have specialist teachers for Music, ICT and German. French has recently been introduced to our curriculum. Children in Key Stage One enjoy a well resourced creative area attached to each classroom. This encourages language, role play and real world activities such as cooking and gardening. These activities also help to promote children’s understanding of Maths and Science.
Reading is of paramount importance and vital to each child becoming independent learners. Each child is heard by the teacher individually at least three times a week. Teaching assistants in each class provide additional support. Spellings are sent home weekly.
Educational visits and trips help to enrich the curriculum and provide valuable learning experiences. Year one and Two recently visited Monkwearmouth Library for a story telling session, The National Glass Centre and made Victorian Christmas cards at the Winter Gardens .
Children respond to these experiences with enthusiasm and this is reflected in their written work and pictures.
Our aim is to develop each child to reach their full potential.
All children are valued as individuals and learn to develop their talents, relationships and understanding of the world through a caring community here at Sunderland High Junior School.
