Expeditions and trips
The learning which takes place within the classroom is developed and enriched by opportunities outside of the classroom. A typical year at Sunderland High School sees our pupils visiting:
â– Art galleries
â– Theatres
â– Museums
â– Exhibitions in England and Scotland
â– Local Universities
â– London
â– Newspaper Offices
â– Law Courts
â– Outward Bound Centres
â– Wimbledon
â– And many more!
Pupils are also given the opportunity to accompany trips abroad. In recent years teachers have led trips to France, Germany, Poland, Spain, the United States and Malawi.
Malawi
Sunderland High School has a special relationship with the town of Nkhotakota in Malawi. Our first links with Africa were established in 2000, when a group of Sixth Formers, together with Mr Wayman, Head of Design Technology, and Mrs Wayman, Head of Geography, spent a month in Madagascar. Three years later saw another Sixth Form Expedition to Africa, this time to Malawi. The Malawi 2003 Expedition made such an impact upon the team and the whole Sunderland High School community that a decision was taken to return to Malawi in 2005 ... and 2007 ... and 2009... and ... Mr and Mrs Wayman have been a constant presence on the expeditions, joined each time by a fresh group of Sixth Formers, excited and apprehensive in equal measure about what lies ahead. We have just returned from our fifth Malawi Expedition, which took place in July and August of this year. Two things were different about this Expedition: Mr and Mrs Wayman were assisted by a third teacher - Mr Brotherton from the Science Department; and the group numbered a record-breaking 24 students, taken from Year 12 and Year 13. Almost £25,000 was raised by the school community for the three projects we support in Nkhotakota - another record!
