More for Malawi

The total amount raised for the Sunderland High 2011 Malawi Expedition keeps on shooting upwards, with the current total being in excess of £3,700. Recent fundraising events include three bag packs over the holidays, raising £829, £993 and £1502 respectively. Also, a big thank you to Mrs Jackson (Alec Jackson Y13’s mother) who raised £231 from the sale of her delicious homemade mini Christmas cakes.  (S.Ward)

Does Asteroid 74400 deserve a better name?

The international astronomical union is giving away the chance to rename asteroid 74400(1998XH97) as it’s a bit of a mouthful and many people would prefer a name that isn’t so hard to remember and doesn’t take quite so long to say. All you have to do to win this once in a lifetime opportunity is write a short story that has the word asteroid and the name you want to give 74400 in it. The name you choose could be recognized worldwide as the name of this specific ice block. For more information about the competition, please pick up a form from outside the office in Langham Tower. (A.Embley)

 Exams, exams and more exams!

Almost all pupils in the Upper School (Y11-13) have had or will soon have exams over the first few weeks of term. Sixth Form students have had a range of exams spanning most of the A level subjects, while Year 11 have had Science and Business Studies modules. All are hard at work with plenty of revision and studying going on.  Remember, everyone – do your best as these exams are ones that really matter!  (S.Ward)

Mysterious visitor

Langham Tower found itself host to an unexpected guest early on Monday morning, when an enormous teddy bear mysteriously appeared in Dr Slater’s office.  Swift detective work revealed that the bear belongs to Mrs Hope but could soon be yours!  First, like Asteroid 74400, s/he needs a name.  Get your ticket for the ‘Name that Bear’ competition if you would like to take part.  Once named, the bear will be able to move to his/her new home.  Raffle tickets for the bear will be on sale over the next week.  Be in it to win it!
