School Cub Pack Activities

The School Cub pack was runners-up in the Sunderland District Cub General Knowledge Competition which was held on 13th February. Our team of Zoe Banks, Ruth Embley and India Hammal competed against Cub Packs from across the city answering questions on a range of subjects including Sunderland, Cub Scouting, General Knowledge, Entertainment  and Sport. Unfortunately,  they were pipped at the post by an all-boys team from St Aidan's Church who knew just a little more about football.  Our congratulations go to the team for an excellent performance.

Congratulations

To the following children who are celebrating birthdays over the next few days: Megan Wilson, Louise Peart, Amelia Maginn, Kinjal Sensarma, Alice Maginn, Karyan Coates and Poppy Tomlinson

Netball News

Last week SHS played Chorister School in a high five netball game. The team was Ellie, Becky, Samantha, Lauren, Naini, Louise and Alice. At first, Choristers scored a number of goals then we passed the ball up the court where we scored out first goal. Unfortunately, we didn't score any more goals but the team was not down-hearted! We played very well for our first high five game and Choristers played very well too. ‘Man of the match' was Alice. Also playing last week was the Yr 6 netball team against Choristers. The team comprised Ellie, Lucy S, Lucy R, Ingrid, Kate D, Olivia and Macy. This was also the first time that Yr 6 had played ‘high five' but despite trying their hardest, the team lost. Lucy S scored our only goal whilst ‘man of the match' was Olivia. Many thanks to Miss Bowerman and Miss Eden for taking the girls.

Forthcoming Events

Friday 18th February - Staff  Training Day

Monday 21st February - Half Term Holidays

Monday 28th February - Children return to school

Wednesday 2nd March - St John's Assembly, 8.50am

Two reminders! All parents are very welcome to join us for assembly at St. John's Methodist Church on 2nd March and indeed every time that we have a service there (usually the first Wednesday in each month). We would be delighted to see you as would Rev Derek.

The school inspectors return on 9th March for three days. The on-line questionnaire can still be completed up until that date. If you have not done so yet then we would be most grateful if you could give this some consideration. Many thanks!

Reception Activities

Last week the Reception class were hard at work making interesting patterns with peg boards. They also had the opportunity of learning about old steam trains and even played with a 1930s clockwork train set! This week, the children enjoyed a visit from a working ambulance and its team followed by a visit to a real Police Station. Whilst there, Mr Bulmer tried out a police cell for naughty children with a view to installing one in school after half term - only joking of course!! Who said that learning can't be fun and engaging?

Active Kids

Miss Bowerman has started collecting the Sainsbury 'Active Kids' vouchers. She would be very grateful if these could be brought along to either school where there is a collecting box.

Brain Puzzles for Half Term!

If you enjoyed the previous puzzle about the animals and houses, then here are three more puzzles to help keep your brain fit and active during the half-term holidays! Enjoy!

Puzzle 1

There are three switches downstairs. Each corresponds to one of the three light bulbs in the attic. You can turn the switches on and off and leave them in any position. How would you identify which switch corresponds to which light bulb, if you are only allowed one trip upstairs?

Puzzle 2

During a recent plane and train spotting contest, five eager entrants were lined up ready to be tested on their spotting ability. They had each spotted a number of planes (26, 86, 123, 174, 250) and a number of trains (5, 42, 45, 98, 105). From the clues below, can you determine what colour anorak each was wearing, their position, their age (21, 23, 31, 36, 40) and the number of trains and planes spotted?

1. Simon spotted 44 less trains than planes.
2. Keith was 36 years old.
3. The person on the far right was 8 years younger than Simon, and spotted 174 planes.
4. James was wearing a beige anorak and spotted 37 trains fewer than Simon.
5. The person who was wearing a green anorak, was 19 years younger than the person to his left.
6. Steven spotted 105 trains and 250 planes.
7. The person in the centre was 31 years old, was wearing a blue anorak and spotted 42 trains.
8. Alan, who was on the far left, spotted 26 planes, and spotted 72 trains more than planes.
9. The person who was wearing a red anorak, was 4 years older than Keith and was not next to the person wearing a blue anorak.
10.The person who was next to the 31 year old but not next to the person who spotted 26 planes, was wearing a orange anorak, and spotted 45 trains.

Puzzle 3

After a local art theft, six suspects were being interviewed. Below is a summary of their statements. Police know that exactly four of them told one lie each and all of the other statements are true. From this information can you tell who committed the crime?
