‘Hands on' Science!

The children from Nursery, Reception and Year 5 had the opportunity of experiencing the thrill of a large plasma dome before the half term holidays. This really caught their imagination and fascinated them as the light patterns followed their hands around the globe.

Congratulations

To the following children who are celebrating birthdays over the next few days: Tom Cullen, Max Hodgson and Sam Bulmer.

World Book Day

This Thursday saw the celebration of ‘World Book Day' with most of the children coming to school dressed as a famous character from a book they have enjoyed. It was incredibly difficult to select one winner from each class as the standard was so high. Well done to everyone who took part and especially to all the mums and dads who helped with the amazing costumes!

Half- Term Puzzle Answers!

Hopefully many of you were able to work out the answers to the logic puzzles set before the half term holidays! If you are still struggling, then the answers can be found further on in this website edition. Meanwhile, here is a much easier puzzle for you to try. Five girls took part in a race. Alison finished before Bunty but behind Clare. Debby finished before Emma but behind Bunty. What was the finishing order?

Netball Match Report

On Thursday, 17th February Sunderland High Junior School played Teesside Prep in Netball at Sunderland High. The team was Louise, India, Lauren, Alice M, Ruth, Kayleigh, Beckie, Ellie, Samantha and Alice L.

It all looked bad at first, as Teesside scored two goals quite quickly which lowered our confidence but we held our heads high and thanks to Alice L who scored a great goal, made it 2-1 to Teesside. We did really well in defence and at half time the score was 6-5 to Teesside. Then, we all switched places. Sadly though, in the second half, Teesside went on the attack and managed to score 7 more goals making the final score 13-6 to Teesside. All of the team played well and girl of the match was Louise. Many thanks to Mrs Hill, Miss Bowerman and Miss Eden for organising the match. Thank you also to Louise for the match report!

Football News

Following their success in a cup competition before Christmas, the Sunderland High Junior under 11 football team will be representing Durham County in the English Schools FA Small Schools' Sevens Northern Regional Final. This is both a tremendous achievement and honour for the school. The finals take place at Newcastle Academy on Wednesday 9th March at 12noon. Spectators are very welcome and we wish the team all the best!

Boys Swimming Trunks

We have now investigated alternatives to the small ‘Speedo' trunks that boys have previously worn. Although the Speedo briefs will still be available, priced at £8.50, we can now offer Boys Jammers (trunks) in navy and red at £14 (size 22 to 30 inch) or £16 (size 32 to 40 inch). If any parents are interested in purchasing these alternative swimming trunks then please send a note to Mrs Walls who can then place an order. Please note that all boys from Year 3 onwards must wear either the Speedo briefs OR the new alternative ‘jammers' - both of which are in the school colours.

Book Fair

A reminder to all parents and children that the travelling Book Fair returns to our school week beginning 14th March. The Book Fair will be based in the school library and will remain there until Friday 18th March. The purchase of books does much to support the acquisition of new books for our school library and sales will be available each break time and after school.

Tesco Vouchers

A reminder that the school is once again collecting Tesco school vouchers so please bring these along to the school office. Thank you for your kind support!

Puzzle Answers!

Switches Puzzle - You turn 2 switches "on" and leave 1 switch "off" then wait about a minute. Now enter the room, but just before you enter, turn one switch from "on" to "off". Once in the room, feel the lightbulb - if it is warm, but off, it has to be the last switch you turned off. If it is on, it has to be the switch left on. If it is cold and is off, it has to be the switch you left in the off position.
