Rising from the Ashes

Last week saw our annual Ash Wednesday Church Service take place in St Ignatius Church. The service was conducted by Fathers Andrew and Stephen, and featured a sermon on how sometimes it’s best to worship quietly rather than in order to receive the recognition of others; as well as how participating in Lent can be beneficial for reasons other than just faith. During the service, pupils and members of the congregation were invited to have an ash cross drawn on their forehead as an outward sign of Ash Wednesday, as well as to receive Communion or a blessing. We also listened to prayers, readings and music from members of the school. The service was enjoyed by all, and members of staff received many compliments on how well behaved and respectful the School was throughout. Thank you to Father Andrew and Father Stephen.                      (Mark Thompson)

Match Report Special U 13 Football

SHS Vs NSB ‘On the 3rd of March, Sunderland High played Newcastle School for Boys in an Under 13 football match. After 10 minutes, Sunderland were 2-0 down but shortly after Ayo Fagbemi scored a spectacular goal and Nick Thompson scored a penalty to make it 2-2.  Early in the second half, Aidan Dixon scored a volley to put Sunderland in the lead. Shortly after, Newcastle equalised to make it 3-3 but it wasn’t level for long as Joseph Lee put Sunderland back in the lead with a great left-footed strike. In the last minute we scored an unlucky own goal which made the final score 4-4. Mr Gardener’s man of the match was Nick Thompson.   Thanks to everyone for playing and to Mr Gardener for arranging the fixture.    (Nick Thompson and Christopher Tilley)

6th Form Football

Yarm v SHS ‘On Wednesday the 9th of March, Sunderland High School’s 6th Form football team travelled to Yarm for their second match of the season. Sunderland High dominated the early stages and deservedly took the lead midway through the first half when Harry Eddowes whipped a ball in from the right to Sean Usher who, after beating the last defender with a neat touch, fired the ball past the Yarm keeper.

The second half began in a similar fashion, but Yarm were gifted an equaliser against the run of play when a defensive error due to difficult conditions allowed Yarm a one-on-one and they finally got the better of an impressive Sam Hogg in the Sunderland High goal. Sunderland High continued to threaten, dominating the possession, but Yarm were still a threat on the counter attack, especially with their introduction of a lightning quick left winger who immediately troubled the right side of the Sunderland High defence. Unfortunately, again against the run of play, Yarm took the lead late on when poor marking from a corner gave the home team a free header and an undeserved lead. Sunderland High could easily have equalised from any of a number of late chances, noticeably when a goal-bound shot from Sean Usher was deflected into the relieved Yarm keeper’s arms. Despite this late effort, Yarm held out to win 2-1, but Sunderland High’s performance merited a much better result. Man of the match was Alex Ruff.’    (Jonathan Russell)
