Enterprising Y8 pupils soar to success

‘On Tuesday 29th March Year 8 were engaged in an Enterprise Day called ‘Soaring to success’ for which we were allowed non-uniform. We were told to meet in the Conference Room after Assembly, where we were put into five groups of five. Each group was given an adult helper from different organisations. Our tasks were given to us in a folder, along with stationery and materials. The first task was to untie a massive knot of skipping ropes. Each member of the team had to hold a handle and wasn’t allowed to let go. To make it even harder, we had to do the first five minutes in silence.Task two was to create a theme park name and a unique theme for this park. There were lots of creative ideas from each group and it was very hard to narrow these ideas down. However, each group had to decide on just one name and one theme for their park. For task three we had to create the longest paper chain we could with only two sheets of A3 paper, within a time limit. For task four, we had to design five different rides for our theme park, together with any other facilities that the park may have needed. For task five a quiz sheet was given to each table. Most of the questions were about different theme parks around the world and Disney characters. In this task our adult helpers weren’t allowed to assist us in any way.The most exciting task of all was to create a small scale model of the theme park we had created. This model had to include all of the rides and facilities that we had decided upon in task four. We were given much more time for this task but were given a limited amount of material.Once we had finished the model each group had to design a poster and an information sheet to promote the theme park they had created. All of these tasks led us up to a final task which was to make a presentation to the year group and the adult helpers. The winning team won a box of Maltesers. It was an enjoyable and exciting day. Thanks to Mrs Roddy for organising this fun event! ‘(Written by Edward Burdon, Dario Slifkin and Brandon Hudson.)

Japan Appeal Week

From the 4th to 8th April, the Sunderland High School Leos Club will be running a charity appeal in aid of Japan in the aftermath of the earthquake and tsunami.  If we all were able to donate £1 to the cause, we would be able to make a difference to the lives of some of those who are suffering after this terrible natural disaster.    (Sebastian Ward)

Malawi Curry Night

The Malawi 2011 Team are organising a curry night to help gather funds to assist our partner  school, hospital and orphan day care centre in Nkhotakota.  Tickets to the event are £15 each, and can be bought from any of the Malawi Team members, from whom further details are available.

SHS CBN11 Success

The Sunderland High School Charity Band Night 2011 was a fantastic success with over £320 pounds raised for charity. The night kicked off at 6:15 and continued until 8:20, with all musicians exceeding expectations and performing brilliantly. The final act of the night was Prior Arrangement and the Elastic Bands, composed entirely of members of staff, who performed an excellent rendition of Ben E. King’s ‘Stand By Me’.  A huge thank you to everyone who turned up to support the bands, to all who took part, to the members of staff who assisted with catering and logistics and to Dr Slater and Mrs Robson for their help and for allowing it to happen.   Photographs may be released next week! EcoKids Textile Recycling Project

To raise money for the Malawi 2011 Expedition, the school is taking part in a scheme called Ecokids Textile Recycling Project. This involves recycling old and unwanted goods such as clothes, bric-a-brac, shoes and toys. For every tonne of goods collected, the school receives £550 to go towards the Malawi Expedition appeal. If you are interested in taking part simply fill a plastic sack with unwanted goods and bring it to school. Try to bring as many bags as possible - they can be brought in to school up until Friday 6th May. Please bring any bags you fill to school on a Friday and hand them in to the Main School Office, from where they will be collected. Thank you!  (Joe Davison)
