Junior Newsletter 13th May 2011

Issue 29

Lunch Menu

Meals from Monday 16th May will be menu number 2. The Junior Lunch Rota for this week will be Year 3 at 12.15, Year 6 at 12.25, Year 4 at 12.35 and Year 5 at 12.40.

Maths Clinic

A reminder that the maths clinic, kindly held by Mrs Jewitt every Wednesday is for all children. This is a great opportunity for gaining a little extra support in mathematics and to overcome any worries that you might have in the subject! We are here to help!

Summer Performance

For our forthcoming junior school summer performance we would welcome contributions of fabrics, threads, ribbons and wools etc in greens, browns, yellows and oranges. All would be gratefully received by our budding artists!

Cub and Scout News

Our Cubs are now designated the safest in Sunderland after winning the recent Sunderland District Safety Competition which took place just before the Easter Break. Congratulations go to Zoe Banks and Sam Royal who represented the Pack, and the School, at this event, which was designed to test their knowledge home, road and personal safety, including how to keep safe on-line. The competition also offered a range of fun activities based around the theme of safety and enabled the Cubs to earn their Personal Safety, Home Safety and Road Safety badges. In addition, three of our Cubs, Ruth Embley, Sam Royal and Louise Peart, have also achieved their Chief Scout Gold Award, which is the highest Award a Cub can earn. These awards are being presented to our Cubs at the Sunderland District Scouts AGM on Thursday 19th May. What fantastic news. Many thanks to Kris Woods for this report!

Proposed Beaver Colony

As you may be aware, Sunderland High School operates a highly successful Cub Pack, Scout Troop and Explorer Group which is managed and run by parents exclusively for children who attend Sunderland High School.  Now, after several years without a Beaver Colony we are researching the feasibility of reinstating this important section from September 2011 and would greatly appreciate your feedback.

Our Beaver Colony would be open to both girls and boys aged between 5 years and nine months to 7 years and six months - children aged 7 years and six months or older are eligible to join our Cub Pack.

Meetings would take place in Junior School every Thursday, possibly from 5.30 until 6.30pm.

Cost  £30 per term for the first child and £25 for each subsequent child payable to the Scout Group.

We are also looking for adults to come along as occasional helpers, on a rota system, to lend a hand with things like preparing juice and biscuits, joining us on outings, running games and activities or helping with the admin.

In order to gauge the level of interest, I would be grateful if you could complete the reply slip at the base of the letter being sent home to children in Reception, Years 1 to 3 and return it to Cheryl McArdle, or email your comments to kw@kwacom.com.  Further information on the Scout Association and Beaver Colonies  can be obtained by visiting www.scouts.org.uk/beavers

Thank you for your time - Kris Woods

Many thanks go to Mr Smith and Mrs McVay for helping to make this an incredible experience for all of the children.

Open Day

Our final Open Day of this academic year takes place on Saturday 21st May between 10am and 2pm. If you know of any families interested in finding more about our outstanding school then please encourage them to come along.

School Swimming Classes

Swimming classes will continue from September at the Raich Carter Centre. Years 1 to 6 will each have a term there except for the first and last week of each term. These classes will take place every Tuesday morning in the same way as they have done this year. Nursery and Reception classes will continue to have alternate Friday morning sessions.

Please note that from September the wearing of school swimming costumes and caps will be compulsory for all children from Reception to Year 6. The wearing of alternative costumes or ‘Bermuda trunks' will not be allowed. For infant boys, the correct ‘speedo' trunks should be purchased from the school shop. For boys from Year 3 onwards, a new, longer style of trunk in the school colours is now available. Mrs Walls is placing an order during the summer term so these will be available to purchase by the start of the new academic year.

Congratulations

To the following children who are celebrating birthdays over the coming week: Blake Stephenson , Ellen Hoggett, James Cottam and Rosie Callaghan
