Young and old together in netball success

On Monday 23rd May, the sports hall was the venue for the inaugural SHS Primary Schools Netball Tournament, organised by PE Teacher Mrs Little.

There were 5 teams competing, representing 4 different schools - Benedict Biscop, Fulwell Juniors, Richard Avenue, and Sunderland High Juniors, who had 2 teams. The tournament was played in round robin style and was umpired by girls from the Year 10 netball team who also acted as mentors for the teams. The emphasis was on taking part and enjoying the experience - but there was evidence of a high standard of play and sportsmanship throughout.  The eventual winners were Sunderland High 'B' team, with Fulwell Juniors following in 2nd place. All participants – both boys and girls - received a certificate and enjoyed refreshments at the end of the tournament.

Congratulations to Mrs Hill, coach of the SHS teams.

D of E Bronze Award Practice Expedition  (Megan Dutta, Katie Crawley, Alex Meldrum)

The Task:

Complete a 27 mile walk over 2 days covering various check points using an OS map and compass, carrying a huge rucksack containing a lot of things we wished we hadn’t packed.

Key achievements along the way:

Backache, blisters (apart from Megan), a sprained ankle.

What we learnt:

How to whistle using blades of grass

How to tackle a stressful situation as a team – coming to terms with being lost and having to work with each other to get home.  At times, we could only get through this by hugging, singing and crying.  We arrived 3 hours later than all the other teams.

For the Actual DofE expedition, we will NOT:

Pack 3 different outfits                          MD

Pack pyjamas                                           AGM

I will: Learn to read a map before I go    KC

Friends re-unitedBack in the snows of December, Year 11 pupils Neeta Dulai and Gabriella Pickering were part of the group of SHS pupils who went down to Nelson Close to organise a Christmas Party for the elderly residents.  While they were there, they befriended Mary, who was their guest for the afternoon.  The girls were fascinated to learn that Mary was a very proud 95 year old, and they made a note of her birthday for future reference.  Imagine Mary’s delight when Gabriella and Neeta turned up at Nelson Close on her 96th birthday earlier this month with a celebratory card and gift.  Well done, N and G!
