Junior Newsletter 24th June 2011

Issue 34

Lunch Menu

Meals from Monday 27th June will be menu number 3. The Junior Lunch Rota for this week will be Year 3 at 12.15, Year 5 at 12.25, Year 6 at 12.35 and Year 4 at 12.40.

Curriculum Week Celebrations

Last Friday, the children presented their work on the theme of ‘water' to the rest of the school. This was the conclusion of a creative curriculum week at SHS whereby the children investigate maths, literacy, history, geography, music etc through a theme rather than through a particular subject.

Reception presented some Bible Stories, they were then joined by the children from Year 1 to give us a lovely song.

Year 1 then told us about Grace Darling.

Year 2 gave us facts about the River Wear as well as a splendid rendition of ‘The Lambton Worm'.

Year 3 told us some amazing facts about rivers.

Year 4 recited a poem about Water by Sharon McDonald.

Year 5 provided us with a selection of their own water poems, presentations and facts about the Lake District.

The presentations finished with ‘The Rainforest Song' sung by Year 6 accompanied by other year groups.

Well done to all of the children for their magnificent efforts throughout the week. We hope to put on a display in the school for parents to see some of the excellent work that the children have done.

Sports Week

Congratulations to all of the children who took part in our Sports Afternoons and Swimming Gala this week - every single person was a ‘winner'. Thank you to all of the parents who came along to give their support. Thank you also to the PTA for kindly providing the refreshments.

Swimming Gala

Well done to the boys and girls who entered into the competitive part of the swimming gala - the fun element was a huge success too. The results were:

1st - Drake       62 points

2nd - Tiger        60 points

3rd - Swift         54 points

4th - Panther     46 points

Thank you to Mr Rich for organising this event along with all the other staff for helping.

Victoria Hall Disaster

The children from Year 5 represented our school last week in Mowbray Park at the remembrance service in honour of the children who tragically lost their lives in the Victoria Hall Disaster 128 years ago. The service was conducted by Father Stephen Edmonds, one of our parents. The children also managed an appearance on Look North as well as the Sunderland Echo as they remembered the 183 who died on that fateful day.

Gymnastics Success!

Karyan , Phoebe and Matthew did very well at the Sunderland Schools Gymnastics Association Annual Competition.  They were up against children from Barnwell, Grindon Hall, Shiney Row, New Penshaw, East Rainton, Gillas Lane and English Martyrs at Key stage 2 "Straight Line" gymnastics. Karyan came first, Phoebe 3rd and Matthew was the highest scoring boy, however he was the only one!

The organiser said that Sunderland High would have most likely won the best team award but you need a minimum of 4 to be in the team. Unfortunately, there were just those 3. Perhaps that is a call for more boys and girls to take up this popular sport!

PTA Cycle Ride / Country Park Walk

The PTA are holding another cycle ride / walk on Saturday 9th July at Herrington Country Park. Whole families are very welcome to attend this popular event. There will be clues to solve along the way and prizes on offer. Please contact either school office for more details.

Congratulations

To the following children who are celebrating birthdays over the coming weeks: Phoebe Hills and Sarah Edmonds.
