MacMillan Coffee Morning
Every year, pupils, friends, parents and whoever else you can find flock to Clifton Hall for the MacMillan Cancer Support coffee morning fundraiser and last Friday was no exception. There were dozens of colourful stalls, ranging from cake decoration to hair and nails, as well as loads of games, raffles and sweet stands which everyone tried with great enthusiasm. Certain students and teachers threw dignity to the wind with the ever popular wet sponge-throwing stalls, but luckily everyone else stayed warm and dry, thanks to the sunny weather which along with the pupil bands on our outdoor stage made for a very pleasant atmosphere. Other attractions included cake stands, penalty shoot outs and a chocolate fountain, all for a fantastic cause. The current total raised is £1,200 and still counting! Thank you to everyone who got involved.
Open Day 2011
On Saturday 15th October, Sunderland High School opens its doors to potential new pupils and their parents, or anyone who fancies a look around! Everyone is welcome - be sure to bring friends and family for a taster of life at SHS.
Mentoring
In recent weeks Mrs Roddy has been gearing up to train her brand new, willing and eager group of mentors. The age range is from 14-16 with each and every mentor trained to understand the trials, stresses and tribulations of school life and happy to chat with or help anyone to overcome their problems. The scheme is now up and running for members of Year 10 and under. For more details, contact Mrs Roddy.
Calendars
It’s getting towards the colder months when your 2011 calendars are coming to an end and it’s almost time to purchase a brand spanking new calendar. Well, Sunderland High and the current Year 10’s have provided you with their ‘What a View’ 2012 Calendar.
There are two calendars available to purchase: a classic A4 sized calendar for £5.99 or a smaller (but no less fabulous) A5 sized version for £4.99 .
The photographs are pictures of various familiar sites of the UK, taken by a group of budding photographers in this year’s Year 10. The ‘What a View’ pictures vary widely from month to month, starting in January with a panoramic view from Skiddaw in the Lakes and ending with a stunning view of Rougie waterfall, Scotland, with of course much more in between.
Sunderland High’s ‘What a View’ calendar is in aid of ‘Macmillan Cancer Support’ and all the proceeds will be given to them, to help support people and families that are affected by cancer.
To order a calendar please email Mrs Thompson at: Julie.thomspon@church-schools.com
House Music
Wednesday 5th October was the day when the much anticipated House Music competition finally happened. For weeks the tension had been building between all four House Captains ad on Wednesday it finally came to a head.
There was a new order of events for this year’s competition as Mrs Summers took over from Mr Render in organising the event. Firstly, each House took turns in choosing a piece of paper which had on it the running order that day. Swifts picked the piece of paper that instructed their acts to play first (which was met by a wave of exasperated sighs). Tigers were to go 2nd, Panthers 3rd and lastly Drakes.
As each act stepped up into the spotlight it became clear that Sunderland High is a hive of musical talent. There were a variety of bands with their own unique covers, woodwind instruments galore, and, of course, this year’s Disney theme enjoyed by both the young and the young at heart. There was even a very unique rendition of ‘Milkshake’ by talented Year 10 performer Lee Martin.
The results as yet have not been announced. Dr Slater, the judge of the competition, showed that she didn’t have a PHD for nothing as she wrote all her judging opinions in Russian so that nobody could peer over her shoulder and get a sneak preview of the marks. Mrs Summers is still deciphering them, but the outcome will be announced very soon!
All in all, it was a very enjoyable (and musical) afternoon and we would hope it will continue for years to come.
