Arrangements for 30th November

Dear Parents,

Arrangements for Wednesday 30th November

You may be aware that the teaching unions as well as other public service unions have voted to take industrial action and go on strike on Wednesday 30th November. The strike is not specific to Sunderland High School, and will affect every school in the country to a greater or lesser extent.

As a result of the information that I have received from the trade unions, I am now in a position to let you know arrangements at Sunderland High School for Wednesday 30th November.

Junior School

Junior School (pupils in Nursery - Year 6) will be open on Wednesday 30th November and we will be operating as normal a school day as is possible under the circumstances. There may be minor changes to the timetable, but we will endeavour to keep these to a minimum.

Senior School

From the information I have received from the trade unions, I have been advised that the majority of Senior School staff at Sunderland High School will exercise their right to strike.  I have investigated a range of solutions to this situation and have made the following arrangements:

It is my intention that Senior School will be open for Year 10 and Year 11 pupils.   Although it will not be possible to follow the normal timetable, an alternative programme will be offered, combining a small number of subject-specific sessions with generic skills and activities appropriate to the GCSE years.

Unfortunately, despite my best efforts to find alternative solutions, school will be closed to Year 7, 8 and 9 pupils and to Sixth Formers on Wednesday 30th November.

This is not a decision that I have taken lightly.  As you are aware, I have always endeavoured to keep the school fully open but, given the widespread nature of this strike, I will not be able to do so in these circumstances.

Whilst this industrial action is out of my control, I wanted to apologise for any inconvenience it causes you and give you as much notice as possible so that you have time to make any necessary plans for your children.  If circumstances change I will, of course, keep you fully apprised.

Yours sincerely,

Dr Angela Slater

Head of Sunderland High School
