 Senior Newsletter January 12^th 2012 

Welcome back and Happy New Year to you all! It’s a windy and blustery start but it’s mild compared to the snowy start this time last year. 

A dive into Christmas 

13^th December 2011 is a day I will always remember. 

It was the day I qualified as a PADI Open Water Scuba Diver.   Following pool training, lectures and an extremely cold dive in Ellerton Lake,  North  Yorkshire,  my family and I travelled to Sharm El Sheikh on the southern-most tip of the Sinai Peninsula to complete our remaining 3 open water dives in order to gain our certification.

We visited 5 dive sites in total including Ras Katy and Ras Ghazlani in the Ras Mohamed National Marine Park. It was simply an awesome experience in the warm crystal clear water, swimming carefully in the beautiful coloured caves of coral which towered above as we watched clown fish playing and moray eels hiding (but still bearing enough of their teeth to warn you off!)  Multi coloured parrot fish, lion fish and bright yellow striped trigger fish would amble by while the blue spotted sting rays tried to hide in the sand with the giant clams on the sea bed.  At the Temple Reef site we were guided to a large isolated piece of coral in the shape of a Christmas tree.  Reef fish darting in and around it made it appear to have twinkling lights on – amazing! 

What’s next?

I might try Advanced Open Water Diver training.  One thing for sure is I will dive again.
